My boyfriend and his brother went in together to buy CASHFLOW, Investing 101 in late 2001. His brother actually had possession of the game, and played quite a bit. I was invited to play a game with them a couple of months later.

I drew the occupation of the Nurse.

Almost four hours later, when the Janitor won the game, I was no closer to getting out of the Rat Race and extremely frustrated. I had listen to my boyfriend and his brother rave about this game for a long time and I hated it. Financially, I was in a better position than either of them, yet I was obviously not doing something right, since I hadn't even come close to making it out of the Rat Race.

It took me until the third time I played the game to make it out of the Rat Race in under 3 hours. Since then, I have learned many new lessons from the game, and it is so much more enjoyable (as are most games when you are good at them and tend to win).

On October 28th, 2001, playing with my boyfriend, I was out of the Rat Race in 10 minutes! I was playing the Janitor. I took out a bank loan to buy a house, had a market card that sold the house for a nice profit, then got a Big Deal that gave me enough passive income to quit the Rat Race. I have since then had another 10-minute game, and have seen my boyfriend get out of the Rat Race in 15 minutes. Granted, these are rare occasions, but it is possible, if you know what you are doing.

I am currently working my way through each occupation to see if I can play it and get out of the Rat Race in under one hour. So far, I have done so with the lower six occupations, if ranked by their starting cashflow.

I look forward to playing CASHFLOW, Investing 202, and will write more about it once I have played the game a few times.

I believe the CASHFLOW board game is a wonderful financial teaching tool for kids and adults alike. Perhaps even more so for adults, since we have to go through the trouble of "un-learning" a lot of bad financial habits we've picked up over the past 20-30-40-50 years. And while some of those habits might not be "bad" per say, there are other ways of doing things if you are open to looking at them.

Yes, buying the game costs considerably more than buying any other board game, or even an electronic game for that matter. But consider it an investment in your future. The things you learn playing this game, listening to the audio cassettes and watching the video that are included, will make back your money a thousand times over, if you are willing to put in the time and effort to learn and implement the lessons taught here.
